Spybot Search & Destroy

Downloading Spybot
Updating and Running Spybot
Advanced Options

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY 1.4 INSTALLED. (Not version 1.3)

(*Running an outdated version does not help you clean your computer, and you will still be vulnerable!)

Downloading Spybot

The first time you start Spybot Search and Destroy, it will walk you through the basics, searching for updates, downloading them, and immunizing your computer against certain Spyware... If you have run it at least once, here is the regular way to update and run it during normal use:

(1) Click on “Search for updates”

(2) When it finds updated definitions, click in the checkboxes for each update then click on Download Updates

(3) Next, choose to Immunize; click on the Immunize button:

(4) It will check to see if it is immunized. If it finds items that it is not already protected against, it will ask you to go ahead and immunize. Select Immunize from the top button with the green cross on it .

(5) It will tell you how many problems are now blocked/ Immunized against. Be sure to check and see that the Browser Helper to block bad downloads is installed- make sure the box is checked in front of “Enable Permanent blocking of bad addresses in Internet Explorer.”

THIS LAST STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT. If you don't have that box checked (sometimes it gets turned off!!) then you will just be re-infested and you will just be spinning your wheels and not making progress on getting rid of the spyware!

Please double-check this EACH TIME you immunize.

(6) Click on Search and Destroy again

(7) Click on Check for problems, and begin the scan.

(8) It will show you a progress bar as it is running; when it is finished, it will show you a list of the problems it found.

(9) Click on the “Fix Selected Problems” button

(10) It may take a little time as it creates a System Restore Point, but eventually will ask you if you want to delete the problems it found. Generally, you can delete anything it finds- we have never had a problem after removing anything.

(Side note — if Spybot crashes here while it is repairing the problems- if it says there is an error and spybot.exe could not find the file, or it is not a valid image,or something similar to that, then just keep clicking OK, OK, OK until the message goes away and then run Spybot again. It should be fine after that.)

(11) It may tell you it could not remove everything yet, because some problems are still in memory; it will ask you if it can run again when the system restarts. Say OK- it will only run once the next time you start, not every time.

(12) Close Spybot when finished; you should update and run it at least once a week.

Advanced options- when stubborn Spyware won’t go away- use only if nothing else works and be careful!!

(1) Under the Mode menu, choose Advanced mode. When the dialog box asks you to confirm, say "Yes".

(2) Choose Tools

(3) Click on BHOs, Browser helper objects

(4) You can remove anything that does not have a green check mark next to it- the green check marks indicate legitimate programs.

(5) Click on Tools again, then click on System Startup

(6) Make the entire Spybot window large enough to see the next step- you are going to have to expand the window by clicking and dragging on the bottom right-hand corner so that you can see the startup programs that are listed.

(7) On the right-hand side of the window, double-click the divider so that it opens into two columns, and you can see one for the startup items and one for the descriptions of those startup items

(8) Click on the descriptions on the left one by one- it will give you a rough idea on the right of what each entry might be- if there is no information or you don’t know what it is, it is safest to leave it alone for now. (virus, Spyware, malware.psd)

(9) If it identifies the startup item as a virus or a known problem, then you can delete that item. Click on the item itself and click Delete. You can delete anything that says it is a virus, spyware, or Malware.

(10) If you are not sure about something, and it looks suspicious, simply uncheck it and it should not be loaded next time the computer starts. That way, if you find you actually do need something, then you can always restore it using the Tools again.
