How do I add a networked printer to my computer?

If you are using XP Professional and are part of the Cushnet domain, then adding a printer is easy. You can actually do it several ways.

Go to Start-> Settings and look for the "Printers and Faxes” icon; open it and click on Add Printer.

You can also go directly from the application you are using to to the File-> Print Menu and get to the Add Printer button that way as well.

In that dialog box, choose Find Printer. In the box that follows, click on the Find Now button and a list of available printers should show up. Click on the printer that you want to add it to your computer.

The other/ last resort way to add a printer is:

If you are on XP Pro and the printers do not show up or “map”….

  • Go to the command line. Go Start-> Run and type: \\caserver

  • Double-click on the printer you wish to add; it will tell you that in order to print there, it must be set up on your computer. Say OK and the printer will be added. It will then appear in the Print dialog boxes as an option to print.

If you are using XP Home…

  • Go to the command line. Go Start-> Run and type: \\caserver

  • Since XP Home is not set up for networks, you have to add the following prefix to your username so it “sees” the network: Type cushnet\username and then your password.

  • When the CAServer window opens, double-click on the printer you wish to add; it will tell you that in order to print there, it must be set up on your computer. Say OK and the printer will be added. It will then appear in the Print dialog boxes as an option to print.

  • Note that with XP Home, you will have to sign on in the above manner every time you want to use a network printer!!

Printing Etiquette 101:
PLEASE, if your document does not print right away, please give it a minute and/or check the print queue (line) to see if there is a problem (double-click on the printer icon in Printers and Faxes and you can see the list of what is being printed and if there is some problem.... like the printer is out of paper)

PLEASE DO NOT JUST TRY TO PRINT REPEATEDLY OR YOU WILL END UP WITH MULTIPLE COPIES! This is wasteful of paper and printing resources, and it backs up the shared printer for everybody and slows things down even further.

If you send the print job and:

  1. It does not print

  2. There is a problem with the printer (it will show as an “Error” in the printer window)

  3. You cannot see the printer connected to your computer at all

Then follow the instructions for adding a printer above and checking the print queue/list. If that does not work, send an email to Tech Support (in Cushnet/FirstClass, send to first name Tech, Last name Support) or stop in during Office Hours.

In the library, often the librarians can help. The number one problem in the library is that the printer has run out of paper and needs to be reloaded! Ask the librarians where you can get paper and you can reload the printer and continue.)

Is there a color printer on campus I can use?
Not for general use- if you need a color printer you should bring your own. The only exceptions are for students enrolled in certain classes that require color printing.

What scanners can I use on campus?
There are a few scanners in a number of computer labs: There is one in the Library Lab, as well as one in room 203 and room 211.
