FirstClass & Email
What's my Cushing email address?
Your email address (given to you at the beginning of the year) is simply your username@cushing.org; however, there are two forms of the address, one for outside Cushing and one for inside Cushing.
For people that are outside of campus to be able to email you, they would use the full address of jstudent@cushing.org. For inside Cushing, using the FirstClass email program, just use your full name, like Joe Student.
A helpful tip in FirstClass is that if you do not know someone’s full name, you can type a partial name or initials in the To: field, hit Enter, and it will give you a list of possible matches. This is very helpful when you need someone's address and do not know their full name.
Your username is usually your first letter and last name; the major exception to this is if there is a similar or duplicate name that matches yours, in that case we may change the username slightly. The Technology Office will assign you a username and password at the beginning of the year: Hold onto it, you will need it for everything!
(What if I lose it?)
If you lose it, you have to come down to the Technology Office during Office Hours and all we can do is reset your username and password. You will need to have a valid student ID with you.
Is there a space limit for my mailbox?
Yes, you are only allowed 20 MB of storage space; it is much better to use your server folder to store files, as that limit is 500 MB.
My email got turned off, how do I get it turned back on?
If your email was turned off because you exceeded your disk space limits (20 MB)- be aware: this is an automatic reaction and is done by our software. If you receive a message that says “You cannot send because you would exceed your disk space quota” then you have gone over your limit, and you must trim your email box. You cannot send any more mail until (1) you save your files elsewhere then delete them from your mailbox AND (2) the automated trash pickup empties the trash… which happens overnight. So if you go over your limit, and delete old files, you will still be stuck until the next morning. Be Careful!!
A common cause of this problem is sending large files back and forth- like photos, or big projects- these files, when still in your mailbox, use up valuable space. Delete large files after sending, or better yet-- Use your server!
Another problem we see is when you accidentally have the [ ] Show only new Mail setting clicked, and it looks like you deleted EVERYTHING out of your account, but you still cannot send. In this case, inside of FirstClass go to Edit-> Preferences-> and sleeve Viewing. Make sure that [ ] Show only new items is not checked so you can see all your messages. If it is checked, uncheck it and click Apply.
(*) If your accout was turned off for violating Cushing Acceptable Use policy:
If your email was turned off for violation of email rules or school policies, then you can only get it turned back on through the Student Life office and with the permission of the Dean of Students. If we have notice from that office, then we can turn your mail back on once you are cleared.
Can I access my FirstClass email off-campus or via the web?
You can; the easiest way is to connect using the FirstClass client from your own computer; You should first connect to the internet any way you usually do at home or on the road and then open the FirstClass application.
If you are in a location where you do not have the FirstClass client installed on the computer, you can still access your email by going to http://fc.cushing.org, and log in using our Web page interface. If you get a message saying it is too busy, try back again later on. As we have only a limited number of external licenses you may have to deal with congestion from time to time.
