The CAServer

What is a server anyways?
A Server is a main computer that is used to store files so that they can be reached from any networked computer. It is also a safe place to put backup copies of your work in case something happens to your computer, and believe us… it will.

If you have a copy of your homework saved to the server and your computer doesn’t start, you can still get to it from any networked computer on campus if it is on the server. Also, the server is scanned for viruses, backed up nightly, and has its own power supply backup. Using a server for storage is the way most businesses, schools, and major organizations operate, so you might as well learn how to use one now.

*** YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN DATA! YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO MAKE BACKUP COPIES IN CASE SOMETHING HAPPENS TO YOUR COMPUTER! ***

How do I save files to my server folder ?
If you log onto any Windows XP Professional computer, a shortcut to your server folder will be automatically ‘mapped’ for you, where it should show up as a drive under My Computer. It will therefore also appear in any of the “Save” or “Save As…” dialog boxes, under the drop-down menu triangle that you see when you save a document. Simply navigate there and save as you would in any other place.

How much storage space am I allowed in my server folder?
Students are allowed 500 MB of space on the server—that should be plenty to hold most homework papers, files, and PowerPoint projects. However, due to space (and legal!) issues, MP3s and videos will be removed from the server as needed when we have to have the space for the use of others. Priority for the server will be for academic needs.

What if I have trouble getting to my server folder?
Your server folder should be "Mapped" (it should show up automatically under My Computer) and a printer should be added automatically, but in case they do not show up, there is a manual way to get there.

If you are having difficulty seeing your server folder, try this first … then contact the Tech Office if you still have problems. Use Cushnet/FirstClass and send an email to Tech Support (first name Tech, last name Support).

Getting to the server, “The Long Way”

  1. Open a document (something in Microsoft Word, for example)
  2. From whatever application you are in, choose Save As... to call up the Save/Open dialog box, then:
  3. Click on the big "My Network Places" icon on the left side
  4. Click on "Entire Network"
  5. Click on "Microsoft Windows Network"
  6. Click on "Cushnet"
  7. Click on "CASERVER"
  8. Click on "Students"
  9. Click on your graduation year
  10. Click on your folder; it is in alphabetical order, listed by first letter, last name

From there you can browse to your server folder by following that path, and it should show up in your Save As dialog box once you have saved there at least once.

Method B: If you continue to have trouble, then changing your password, logging off, then logging back on may help!!!

  1. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete; when the panel comes up, click on Change Password
  2. Enter your old password, then a new password twice (just to be sure)
  3. Log off, then log back on again. If the server doesn’t show, email us.
