Ad-Aware (v1.06): Instructions

Updating and Running Ad-aware

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ADAWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06 INSTALLED. (Not version 1.05) (Many returning students have version ADAWARE SE PERSONAL 1.05 which no longer is effective for removing Spyware. Please update your software.)

Follow the method below weekly to maintain a clean system during normal use:

Clear out your Temporary Internet Files as they often contain Adware and Spyware.

For Internet Explorer 6 :

  • On the top menu bar, choose Tools-> Internet Options
  • Where it says, “ Temporary Internet Files ”, click on the [Delete Files…] button
  • Check the [√] Delete all offline content button and click OK

For Internet Explorer 7 :

  • On the right-hand side of the top menu toolbar, click the [Tools] button and choose Internet Options from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the [Delete] button
  • On the next page, where it says Temporary Internet Files, click on the [Delete Files…] button.

 

Run Ad-Aware from your Programs menu, your desktop, or from your Start menu.

Search for updates by clicking on the Check for Updates Now link on the bottom right.

Click on the [Connect] button to connect to update the Ad-Aware definitions.

The program will notify you if new definitions are available. If new definitions are available, download them by clicking [OK].


Confirm download of new adware removal definitions

Select [Finish] when the updates have completed downloading, the program will return you to the main screen. Select on the [Start] button on the bottom right to begin the scan.

Change the setting on the next screen from “Perform smart system scan” to “Perform full system scan”, to complete a thorough check.


Select [Next] to begin the scan process. The program will identify malware, spyware and problem files and entries which are safe to delete.

When it has finished scanning, it will tell you what it found, select [Next] to continue. Then it displays a list of objects which are ready to be removed.

To remove these objects, right-click on the top checkbox and choose “Select All Objects”.

Select [Next] to delete all objects. Do not bother to Quarantine, all objects the program identifies can be deleted safely. Select [OK] to confirm the deleting process.

Note: The program might inform you if it could not remove everything, because some problems are still in temporary memory; the program will ask you if it can run again when the system restarts. Select [OK], this will allow the program to run once on restart.

Close Ad-Aware when you complete the update, scan and removal process. Doing this cleaning (along with Spybot) once a week will go a long way towards making your computer run better.
