What kind of computer and software will I need?
Cushing has a required student laptop program; please review the Laptop Initiative information at tech.cushing.org. Each year the Technology Department and Technology Committee research and investigate the best options for a student laptop and software package. Laptops provide greater mobility and allow students to bring their work with them to class, the library and virtually anywhere else they go. A growing number of teachers are using laptops in their classrooms and Cushing is moving toward increasing the use of laptops in our curriculum. To support the use of laptops, we have installed wireless networking equipment in the academic buildings and the Student Center to supplement our wired network. Servicing is easier with laptops and the Technology Office stocks many of the commonly needed laptop parts for the required model.

What are the minimum computer requirements?
Cushing is a Microsoft Windows based environment for both network and laptop operating systems. Cushing Academy maintains a closed network and is primarily meant for Windows based computers to access the Internet, our email system and the Cushing file and print server. Please note that you will need a copy of Microsoft Office Professional and specific software on your laptop to be “classroom ready” at Cushing Academy. The Technology Department does not support the use of Macintosh computers on the network.

Windows Compatible Computers:

  • Windows XP Professional (Windows XP Home not allowed)
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 10/100 Ethernet Card (usually built-in)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Office Professional 2007
  • Cushing installed Symantec Corporate Antivirus Software
  • Spybot and Ad-Aware software (available for download from tech.cushing.org)
  • FirstClass Client Software (available for download from tech.cushing.org)
  • A wireless networking card

What computer related items should I bring to Cushing?
The following items are recommended for student to have on campus.

  • Personal Printer: Although not required it is often helpful for students to have their own printer in their dorm room. Cushing maintains several network printers throughout the campus in accessible areas.

  • License numbers/ Installer codes: We can not reinstall software without them.

How do I have my computer configured for use on the Cushing Academy network?
All Cushing laptop program computers will be shipped directly to the Technology Department. The Technology Department will add your network user profile as an administrative account on your laptop and add the laptop to the network domain. If you have removed your laptop from the domain over the summer, at registration you may drop off your computer at the Technology Office for configuration. If you have questions regarding adding your computer to the network contact the Technology Department directly at 978-827-7171.

Can I use AOL at Cushing? What about other Internet software?
AOL is accessible from the Cushing Network. However, the Technology Department at Cushing does notsupport AOL or any instant messaging software. Since the Cushing Network is protected by a firewall, not all Internet software is supported due to security reasons; Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox work fine. The primary function of the Cushing Network is educational. Therefore, Cushing Academy reserves the right to restrict access to non-educational services.

What happens if my computer breaks? What do I do about repairs?
Cushing will provide, free of charge, network configuration, CushNet installation and file server support. We will also help with small repairs and repairs covered by the warranty. The Technology Department encourages students to repair their own machine by contacting the computer or software manufacturer directly.

Cushing provides direct support and manufacturer support assistance for computers bought through the school laptop initiative. Repairs typically take a week but at times of high demand may take longer. In the event of a computer malfunction, students who buy under the program are provided with a loaner from the Cushing Academy Technology Department if available. The Technology Department does not support computers which were not bought through the Cushing Laptop program. Cushing does not provide support for non-academic hardware or software. This includes the installation/repair of games, Instant Messaging software, or AOL. Your child should have all computer hardware and software installed and tested before coming to school.
